Pastoral Theology

The Pastoral Theology Program will prepare those pursuing a future in pastoral and pulpit ministry. We offer solid biblical training, opportunities to polish your preaching and speaking skills in many contexts and settings. Biblical language studies in Greek and Hebrew are designed to deepen your understanding of God’s Word.

Key Courses

BIB209-210, BIB309-310 Greek I & II
These New Testament language studies, which often transfer as master-level credits, develop foundational understanding of biblical Koine Greek grammar, syntax, and structure. Students learn to work with Greek lexicons, conduct word studies, and eventually translate passages from the original text.

CED321-322 Homiletics
Led by Senior Pastor Tom Messer, this is a practical study of the preparation and delivery of sermons. Special attention is given to different types of preaching, with an emphasis on expository preaching. Students are given guidance in the proper use of tools to construct good sermons.

CED412 Local Church Administration / Polity
With 30 guest lectures from ministries around the country, this two-part course prepares ministerial candidates for the practical areas of the local church ministry. Topics include recruiting and training workers, advertising, building programs, developing a strategic long-range plan, and staff relations

Youth Ministry

Has God called you to impact the world's youth? The Youth Ministry Program can help you answer the call. Every week you will have opportunities to work in local youth ministry administration and small groups. Gain experience through Trinity's conferences, youth camp, and high school events. The program is mentored by sixteen-year youth ministry veteran Paul Woods.

Key Courses

CED314 Local Church Youth Ministry
These courses instruct students in the foundations of a successful youth ministry from the perspective of an active youth pastor and teaches them how to develop volunteers into leaders and how to communicate effectively with young people. It also instructs students in the responsibilities of ministering to the youth and their families. Students will learn how to operate as a staff member, organize a youth budget, plan and execute youth meetings, and create a practical job description.

CED414 Contemporary Youth Ministry Issues
This course is a study of the issues facing youth today. The course will deal with the developmental nature of youth and the issues affecting youth and their families.

CED426 Youth Ministry Internship
Youth ministry proficiency students will spend a minimum of eight weeks serving in an approved partnering youth ministry under the supervision of a youth pastor. Students will actively participate in a broad spectrum of youth ministry activities

Graduates of TBC's Youth Ministry Program are well-equipped to serve as youth pastors, leaders, and teachers in churches across America and around the world. Our alumni office actively works to connect graduates with potential places of service.

Missions

The missions curriculum is designed for men and women who have surrendered to full-time missionary service. The program is mentored by Greg Mann, who planted eight churches in Guyana, South America. College credit is earned through short-term missions trips. Through a network of over 230 foreign missionaries, you can connect with missionaries on the field who can prep you on current regional trends.

MIS201 Cross-Cultural Ministries
In this course, primary consideration is given to the basic principles of man and his culture by understanding cultural differences and the missionary family’s adjustment to them. Each student is required to make an in-depth study of the culture to which God has called him or her.

MIS202 Missions in the Local Church
This course is designed to assist both missionaries and church leaders in developing an effective missions program for the local church. The responsibilities of the local church and missionaries are carefully outlined. The fundamentals of local church involvement and planning for world missions are explored to prepare both future church and missions leaders for effective ministry.

CED302 Church Planting Course
This course gives a practical, workable program for how to establish a local church. All aspects of the subject are covered, and the course provides guidelines for a step-by-step, workable procedure.

MIS401 Missions Research Project
This course involves an in-depth study of an area of the world or people group including research into the historical, cultural, and religious environment of the country or people group. The student prepares a variety of materials in this research that includes a prayer card, newsletter, a display, and a multimedia presentation.

MIS425 Missions Apprenticeship with a Domestic Church Planter or International Missionary
Each missions major will serve between two and six weeks in an internship working with either a missionary on a foreign field or a church planter in the United States.

Urban Ministry

  • The Urban Ministry Program provides ample hands-on experience, including internship opportunities at Trinity Rescue Mission in downtown Jacksonville, which utilizes a men's center, and women and children's center to help the poor in Jacksonville, FL. Additionally, internships may be available at the Trinity Rehabilitation Farm in St. Johns county, FL. Mentorship opportunities that target at-risk areas in Jacksonville's inner-city provide real-world opportunities to serve while you learn. Study and learn key skills in urban issues, recovery programs and non-profit management.

BUS304 Non-Profit Administration
This course examines principles involved in running a non-profit organization. Legal issues, including organization and set up requirements, reporting requirements and other topics, will be covered. The role of the board of directors and its relationship to the chief executive also will be studied.

MIS312 Theology and Strategy of Urban Ministries
This course emphasizes urban ministry as a local church concept. The church is to have outreach into the urban community in order to help meet physical and spiritual needs. A thorough biblical philosophy of urban ministry in the context of the local church will be developed.


MIS411 Significant Urban Ministry Issues
This class provides an introduction to a variety of interrelated issues typically found in the urban setting and affecting urban ministry. Practitioners and specialists will cover such issues as poverty, hunger, education, chemical dependency, domestic violence, gangs, teen pregnancy, prostitution and the sex industry, and other current issues. Particular focus will be given to issues affecting women and children with exposure to Trinity’s Women and Children's Shelter.


MIS415 Managing Residential Recovery Programs
This course will examine both the spiritual and practical aspects of managing long-term recovery programs. Utilizing the resources of Trinity Rescue Mission and Trinity Baptist Church’s long-term rehabilitation program, students will be given a first-hand look at the challenges presented in such programs.

Counseling

The Counseling Program is led by professional counselor Mr. James Buckner. Weekly mentoring opportunities are available. Students in this program become proficient in counseling techniques that use a biblical approach.

COU232 Critical Issues in Counseling
This course considers important ethical and legal issues involved in counseling which includes various types of abuse, including alcohol and drugs and codependency, and discusses overcoming grief, depressions, stress and anxiety, and suicide. The second half of the course will consider counseling those with financial difficulties.

COU322 Theology of Christian Counseling
This course connects the student with biblical doctrine and practical living. The student will gain insight into the rich theological framework that supports and directs a biblical approach to counseling.

COU421 Counseling Techniques
This course examines various techniques and innovative approaches to Christian counseling, including cognitive therapy techniques and studies the steps involved in the biblical process of counseling. The student also studies how to help people change.


COU422 Counseling Practicum
This will be a supervised experience in counseling with an experienced counselor in either the church or the mission setting. It will be arranged by the administration on an individual basis.
