Jacksonville, FL – The Trinity Baptist College men’s basketball team claimed its second consecutive win, and fifth out of their last eight, by beating Trinity College of Florida 98-61 in front of 518 raucous Eagles fans on Saturday night. The win sends TBC into the Christmas break with a solid 7-4 record, while Trinity College of Florida drops to 1-7.
The Eagles took command early with a stout defensive effort that held the visitors to 20 first half points. On the offensive end, TBC shared the basketball and got great shots on their way to 41 points at halftime.
The second half saw the Tigers make an early run to carve into the lead. After a TBC timeout in which Coach Milligan challenged the players to re-focus, the Eagles once again took command and never looked back. Trinity Baptist pushed the lead to as many as 40 points before settling in for the 37-point win.
As a team, TBC shot 55% from the field, dished out 20 assists, and out-rebounded the Tigers 54-37. They also placed five players in double figures for the first time this season. Three of those players posted double/doubles, with a fourth coming one rebound shy of the feat.
“No question, this was our most balanced effort of the season,” said Eagles Head Coach Pat Milligan. “It is a principle in team sports that when a group plays unselfishly, everyone benefits. That was certainly the case for us tonight.”
Corey Roth led the way with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. He has been the most consistently productive player for the Eagles in the early going. Joining him in posting double/doubles were Zack Shank (20 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks), and Greg Mennona (10 points on 5-6 shooting, and 10 rebounds).
Amahd Simon came off the bench and was perfect from the field with a 7-7 shooting performance on his way to 14 points. Darrin Blye also sparked the Eagles with 11 points, and James Beaudry connected on a pair of 3-pointers on his way to a season-high 8 points. Zack Potter continued to play through a wrist injury, but ran the offense and dished out a team leading 5 assists.
TBC will resume the season in January with a trip to North Carolina for the Piedmont Classic. The Eagles will play the host school on Thursday January 5, 2012 at 7:00pm.
